Il Cimitero delle Fontanelle [Travel Tuesday]

I had lived in the city of Naples twice for a total of six years before I went back to visit last summer.  As life would have it one of my military wife friends from Hawaii was now stationed in my hometown.  I had so much fun getting to visit with her in a place that meant so much to me.  The highlight was having her show to me some aspects of bella Napoli that I had never experienced before.  One of which was seeing the Fontanelle cemetery, which until recent times had been closed off and private any visitors.

The Fontanelle Cemetery is an ancient cemetery located in the Sanita district in Naples.  It gets its name because of the presence of water sources back in ancient times.  The cemetery includes 40,000 body remains that were victims from a the plague in 1656 and cholera in 1836.

There is something known as the 'Pezzentelle' which had provided people with the ability to adopt and placement of one of the unknown skulls which then 'corresponded to a soul abandoned in exchange for protection'.   Which is why you will see many skulls in the photos below not apart of the mass pile but decorated or put in special boxes.  It was a really interesting sight and I really enjoyed getting to see it.

  1. Awesome pictures, as usual. I'm enjoying all the Naples posts because I'll be taking one of my classes in Naples at the end of September!

  2. Oh so awesome! Oh I am secretly jealous and you are going to have a blast eating food there. The pizza is the best. I am a bit biased but Naples is the birth place of pizza. ; )

  3. Bonnie, as always your pictures are stunning! Such an interesting place (albeit, a tad creepy:). I love visiting old graveyards and catacombs and am putting this on my bucket list immediately. Thanks for hosting Travel Tuesdays--looking at photos from my camel trek through the Sahara Desert makes me miss Morocco a whole lot.

  4. The photos look amazing, a bit creepy, but amazing none the less. It must have been so much fun to go back to a place you once called home. And it must have been something walking through that cemetery too.

  16. Hope you do. Its so neat that they finally opened it up for public viewing because it was not the case when I lived there.

  17. I hope you do get to see it Laura. So much in and around Naples. I'm such a history buff so I love going to places like this, even the creepy ones. ;)

  18. So creepy and cool and so neat to see the dates of when these people would have lived.

  19. Right? Its creepy, but draws you in. I def do not want to be scared ever, but seeing these was intriguing due to the history. x

  21. Oh you should! As far as trains and stuff, just be prepared for things to be cancelled or suspended. Always only carry with you what you need and what you do carry with you protect like a mamma bear. Be suspicious of everyone. I hate to say that, but if you do all that then you are less likely be bothered by people or end up having someone take something of yours. Other than that have a wonderful time! I honestly am looking forward to seeing all your lovely photographs and having wanderlust as I look through your travels! x

  22. Oh yes, creepy but interesting. It was so neat especially to walk through 'home' with someone else's yes and see it through them. I love seeing places of history and cemeteries are just in that category. :)

  23. Thank you..and yes, they are creepy. It was very interesting being there because I love history so it was interesting but a tad...ehhh, as well. I'm so glad to host this with Belinda and hope you join in tomorrow too! x

  24. Lol... you don't have to hate to say it... I live in a place where you're advised not to walk around at all because people might try to mug you even if you have no bags, so I'm used to having my guard up. :) Thanks!!!

  25. Beautiful photos, Bonnie. There's so much history in cemeteries, especially those impacted by plagues. It must have been a surreal experience walking through the grounds!
